Westland Wessex HC.2/HCC.4/HU.5/Mk.52 ‘Special schemes’

Description

A British licence development of the Sikorsky S-58, the Westland Wessex was a general purpose duties all-metal helicopter produced by Westland Aircraft Ltd.

The Wessex HC.2 was designed for battlefield tactical support, troop-carrying and casualty evacuation. Powered by twin Rolls-Royce Gnome turboshaft engines, the prototype first flew in October 1962.

The Wessex HCC.4 was produced only in two examples for use by the Queen’s Flight, having a special VIP interior finish and an extra folding step below the cabin door.

The Wessex HU.5, basically similar to the HC.2, represented the version for the Royal Navy, while the Wessex Mk.52 was an HC.2 modification for the Iraqi Air Force. The last user of the Wessex helicopter was Uruguay, who took delivery of several Wessex HC.2s from the RN surplus stock for their naval force in the 1990s.
